Ancient Egyptian Gods

In Egypt certain gods were worshipped in different areas. It was only occasional that some of these gods attained country -wide recognition. Such god was Amon, usually associated with the wind or things hidden. At Thebes he became Amon-Re, king of the gods. Along with Mut and Khonsu he was part of the Theban Triad. The female counterpart to Amon - Amaunet, was also worshipped at Thebes along with Amon and Mut. Both Amon and Amaunet were two of the primordial gods of the Hermopolitian Ogdoad which is a group of eight gods.

Another wide worshipped gods were Antaios who was originally a double god, later joined to create one, probably that of Horus. Anuket was a goddess associated with the gazelle who was worshipped at Elephantine. Apis who was seen as the bull with a solar disk between its horns, was associated with Osiris and Ptah. Aton, also known as Aten, he was worshipped at Tell 'Amarna. Anothere interesting primordial god was Atum who was represented in the form of a human and a serpent and who was the supreme god in the Heliopolitan Ennead - a group of nine gods and formed with Re-Atum together with Re.

The goddess of love, dance and alcohol, Hathor, was depicted as a cow. At Thebes she was also the goddess of the dead. At Dendera she was associated with Isis at Byblos. The earliest royal god- Horus, had the shape of a falcon, with the sun and moon as his eyes. He was mainly worshipped as the sky-god and the ruler of the day but he also had a lot of other forms: Re-Harakhti, Harsiesis, Haroeris, Harendotes, Khenti-irti, Khentekhtay (the crocodile-god), and Harmakhis. The mother of Horus and sister and consort of Osiris was Isis, worshipped at Philae and associated with Astarte, Hathor, Nut and Sothis. Later she was worshipped over the entire Roman Empire. A god resembling a human with a rams head - Khnum, was worshipped in Hypselis, Esna, Antinoe and Elephantine. Another god - Khonsu, who was the son of Amon and Mut and who was worshipped as the moon god had a temple at Karnak dedicated to him.

Min, the god of fertility coalesced with Amon and Horus, was mainly worshipped at Coptos and Akhmim. Mut, worshipped at Thebes, was a consort of Amon and part of the Theban Triad - a group of three gods. The goddess whorshipped as the mother of the sun, moon and heavenly bodies was Nut. Osiris, regarded as the dead king that watches over the whole world and who is rejuvenated in his son Horus was the symbol of eternal life and was worshipped at Abydos and Philae. Ptah was worshipped in Memphis and he was coalesced with Sokaris and Osiris. The sun god of Heliopolis was Re who became from the fifth Dynasty onwards a national god and was combined with the supreme deity Amon.

Serapis was mainly worshipped in Alexandria and was later worshipped by the Greeks who called him Zeus. This deity was never fully accepted by the Egyptians in the Ptolemaic period. The mistress of war and sickness, Sekhmet, was part of the Memphite Triad with Ptah and Nefertem. Seth - the son of Geb and Nut in the Heliopolitan Ennead was presented in the form of a strange animal and was regarded as god of the desert and of foreign lands. Shu, an ancient cosmic power, was regarded as the god of the air and the bearer of heaven. Sobek was a crocodile god and was worshipped at the Faiyum and Ombos. Thoth, the god of sacred writings and wisdom, was worshipped as a baboon in Hermopolis.
