In 1861, the United States faced the greatest challenge to its experiment in democracy.
The industrialized North's progressive political and economic interests threatened the
agricultural economy of the South which relied on slave labor. Soon the economic and
social fabric of the nation became increasingly disparate and ultimately led to a Civil
War which threatened to divide the country.
The U.S. Civil War had great implications outside of the nation in the areas of warfare,
technology and medicine. The introduction of the Gatling Gun in the Civil War battlefields
introduced a new dimension of carnage while the observation balloon allowed for more accurate
intelligence gathering for the Civil War combatants. The U.S. Civil War was a harbinger of the
massive destructive nature of warfare to follow in the 20th century.
