1808 - Admiral Gardner Shipwreck Coins
From the 800+-ton vessel, Admiral Gardner, under the command of Captain John Eastfield come the sunken treasures. The coins ( 10 copper cash ) were minted in England in 1808 for the British East India Company. The coins, which only formed part of this immense cargo, were well packed in wax within small barrels, thus sealing out the ravages of a seagoing voyage to India.
On January 25, 1809, the Admiral Gardner encountered a heavy storm in the English Channel and was subsequently swept onto the rocks and sank with several lives lost. Part of the coin cargo was salvaged from the ocean floor just a few years ago.
These exceptional quality coins, which of course were uncirculated on their maiden voyage shows the coat of arms of the British East India Company on one side with the reverse depicting a Persian inscription translating to "10 cash are 2 Fulus". These coins represent a wonderful find of genuine shipwrecked pieces.
