1777- Russian Copper 5 Kopec Coins
Catherine II, was the Emperess of all the Russias. Here are the massive ( measuring approximately 41 mm in diameter and about 4 mm thick or 1 1/2 inches wide by about an 1/8 inch thick ) coins issued during her reign. They weigh nearly double what the Silver Dollar comes in at ( 1.8 ounces as compared to 1 ounce ). These copper 5 Kopek coins show the year separated by Catherine's monogram ( which is a scripted 'E' and 'T' denoting Ekaterina Tsarina ) and a reverse featuring the double headed Imperial Russian Eagle. A mint mark can often be seen at the base of the eagle ( EM for Ekaterina Mint ). It's amazing to think that it was in this very same building that Tsar Nikolas's family was imprisoned 140 years later, during the Bolshevik Revolution ( 1917 ). The average condition is as shown in these examples.
