1655 China Qing Dynasty Coins

|
The Qing ( meaning 'pure ' ) Dynasty ( 1644 - 1912 ), also known as Ch'ing or Manchu, was the last of the Chinese dynasties. During the Qing period, imperial China reached its zenith of power and influence with a population growth from 150,000,000 to 450,000,000. The Qing extended China's borders farther than they had ever been before, and perfected the imperial system.
It was established in 1644 with the capture of the capital at Peking from the former Ming Dynasty. By adopting the Ming form of government and continuing to employ Ming officials, the Manchus pacified the population. In 1645 they commanded all Chinese men to shave the front of their heads and to wear a Manchu-style pigtail.
Featured here is a large 100 cash coin issued in 1655 by Hsing Ch'ao. The rather unique look of these Dynastic cast copper coins ( round with a square hole, said to represent the skies and the 4 corners of the world ) probably had a good technological reason for the center hole; Firstly, for manufacturing purposes, in that a long rod could be inserted to many coins at one time so as to apply a lathe technique smoothing all the rough edges left by the casting process and secondly, in this society where people went around without pockets these holed coins could easily be strung together and carried. These are all in very nice condition.
