Yaxchilan Lintel Relief | |

Replica of Mayan
original that
currently resides in
the British Museum in
London. The original
is one of three
lintels taken from
Temple 23, or
the "Queen's Temple",
in the ancient city
of Yaxchilan. In 681
A.D. Itzamnaaj B'alam
II (Shield Jaguar II)
ascended the
throne . The
previous century had
been one of constant
warfare between
Yaxchilan and her
neighbors, and the
new king showed
prowess for war.
For forty years
Shield Jaguar II led
his people to
dominate the
conflict. The
situation finally
calmed in 723. Shield
Jaguar II showed
skill as a peacetime
ruler as well, and
launched a massive
rebuilding campaign
that created the
temples and
structures of what is
now the site of
Yaxchilan.
Temple 23 was one of
the first buildings
to be constructed,
and was dedicated to
Shield Jaguar II's
wife, Lady K'ab'al
Xook. The carved
lintels inside the
temple commemorate
Shield Jaguar II's
rise to the throne.
The first depicts
Lady K'ab'al Xook
performing a
bloodletting ritual
while her husband
looks on. The
second, Lintel 25,
depicts the result.
The ritual has
induced a spiritual
state in Lady K'ab'al
Xook, and she has a
vision of a sacred
serpent rising from
the offering bowl .
A god appears from
the mouth of the
snake in the form of
her husband,
signifying his
connection to his
ancestors and his
right to rule
Yaxchilan. In her
hand Lady K'ab'al
Xook holds a small
bowl with lancets and
bark paper used in
the ritual. In the
offering bowl can be
seen more bark paper,
and a length of
barbed rope. An
interesting side note
concerns the
inscription on the
carving , naming
Shield Jaguar II as
the protagonist. The
characters are
reversed and read
right to left, while
the majority of Mayan
inscriptions read
left to right. The
three lintels of
Temple 23 were
removed at the end of
the nineteenth
century by Englishman
A.P. Maudslay and
donated to the
British Museum.
