Nuclear Medical Aspects of Nuclear Radiation
This film is an attempt to argue away the dangers of nuclear radiation and contains some excellent animation. There are some amusing and alarming ideas presented of what radiation can and cannot do to you. At one point the film explains that it's not the radiation that will kill you, it's the blast! The government then suggests going outside 3 minutes after the blast and eating some food! They also suggest ignoring newspaper stories talking about the dangers of radiation. Later the film says not to worry if your hair falls out - it will grow back and you can always wear a toupee!

News Magazine of the Screen: Atomic Energy
This track is a compilation of 1950s newsreel stories on atomic weapons testing, civil defense and nuclear energy. It features many short news bites about the development of the atomic bomb. You will be shocked to see soldiers inch closer and closer to the bomb in each test and trying to hide in trenches when it goes off. This track also eatures underground tests, tests on houses, footage of the first atomic submarine launch, and a few minutes about using atoms for peace.

Operation Cue (1964 revision)
The final track on the first DVD points out the contrast between the Nevada test in 1955 and the much more powerful 1964 test. Some of the most dramatic vintage color footage of nuclear tests is found in these clips. At one point a phony "reporter" observes that the clothes on a test dummy have faded after being exposed to a blast. Later the film comments that "salvaged cans from demolished buildings could have been used for preparing meat" so that the assembled masses at the test can be fed. This lm shows you exactly how far we have come in our understanding of atomic weapons!

About Fallout (1955)
The first track on the second DVD is an attempt to dispel the common myths and fallacies about radioactive fallout. Like many of these Cold War relics, this film is meant to reassure the viewer that the nuclear family is strong enough to survive a nuclear war, and that fallout isn't really that dangerous. You just have to wait two weeks in your shelter! Films like this served two purposes: to encourage the populace to remain calm in the face of terror, and to reassure us that our own use of nuclear weapons was not that horrible. In the calm tones of science and authority, the narrator tells us that atomic weapons are our friends.

About Fallout (1955)

Radiological Defense
In this film we finally see the government admitting that radiation is in fact dangerous. This entertaining film talks about the after-effects of the atomic bomb. The main focus of the film is fallout and how it can travel quite fast. Lots of preventative measures are discussed, including suggestions to build a fallout shelter for your cows and how to protect your sporting equipment!

About Fallout (1963)
The last track is a very optimistic vision of fallout and civil defense countermeasures. What is surprising is the very basic level of the film's ideas to keep yourself safe after an atomic blast. The film suggests that you dust or wash fallout off your body and wrap yourself in a lot of clothing for protection. There is a suggestion to avoid skin contact with fallout and to stay indoors as much as possible.
