Newsreels – The Original Product Placement!
Product placement is everywhere today. When you see an actor in a movie drinking a Coke or stopping to buy a copy of the New York Times, you can bet those companies paid to have their products shown. But, have you ever wondered where the practice of product placement started? The newsreels on these DVDs will show you! It was common practice in the 1930s to show newsreels before the start of the movie feature. Most people did not have televisions yet, so TV news was not generally available. By 1939 people were tired of the hardships of the Great Depression and ready to embrace creature comforts again. That is the point of this clip. In this 1939 short, a suburban California family gets all dressed up to drive their new Chevrolet to see grandma and grandpa, who still live on the family farm. Dad’s in a suit and tie, and Mom has on her Sunday best and chic hat. Are they dressed up to go see the grandparents or are they dressed up to ride in their new Chevrolet? The car is used to symbolize comfort, glamour, conspicuous consumption and personal mobility.
