There were three types of Roman Spears: the heavy thrusting spear, known as the Hasta, the light thrusting spear, known as the Lancea, and the weighted javelin shown here - known as the Pilum. The long iron spearhead was designed to pierce shields or armor and was also designed to bend or break upon impact with its intended target in order to prevent the enemy from throwing the Pilum back.
