Aztec Sun Stone Replica
Replica of Aztec original that currently resides in the National Museum of Anthropology in Mexico city. The "Piedra de los Solas" was carved in 1479 in the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan. The stone is 12' in diameter, 4' thick and weighs 24.5 tons. It was placed atop the main temple in the central ceremonial district, where it stayed until the Spaniards buried it during their conquest. Lost for 250 years, it was rediscovered during repair work in Mexico City's main square in 1790.

At the center of the stone is the god Tonatiuh, the fifth sun and ruler of the present era. Surrounding him are the previous four suns and how they ended: wild animals, wind, fire and floods. The next outward circle contains the glyphs representing the twenty days of the Aztec month. The eight triangles placed along the cardinal points of the compass represent light beams. The outer ring of the stone consists of two flaming serpents facing each other at the bottom. At the top of the stone is the glyph 13 Acatl, or 1479, the year the stone was finished.

The Aztecs believed they were living in the fifth and final sun, and the sun stone gave an account of the beginning and final ending of their world, prompting some to describe it as a "doomsday calendar".

Hand colored cast stone wall sculpture 18" diameter 10 lbs. Ready to hang.
