Stela to Tetisheri | |
|
Replica of Egyptian
original that resides
at Ahmose I's pyramid
complex at Abydos.
To the south of the
pyramid Ahmose built
a shrine dedicated to
his grandmother,
Queen Tetisheri.
The shrine itself is
a large mastaba
shaped mud brick
building, and the
stela can be found at
the end of a central
corridor. The
carving on the face
of the stela includes
two depictions of
Tetisheri, with
Ahmose the I honoring
his deceased
grandmother with
funeral offerings.
The text records the
Pharoah's intention
to build a pyramid
and chapel in honor
of his grandmother.
Ruling Egypt from
1570 to 1546 B.C.,
Ahmose I spent much
of his reign battling
the Hyksos, and Queen
Tetisheri guided the
royal family in his
absence. Queen
Tetisheri established
a pattern of strong
female leadership,
with her daughter
acting as regent
while Ahmose was away
at the Nubian
campaigns, and
culminating in
Tetisheri's great
great granddaughter,
Hatshepsut, actually
becoming Pharoah of
Egypt.
Hand colored cast
stone wall sculpture
19" X 19" 13 lbs.
Ready to hang.
