In the late 4th century BC, Chandragupta Maurya conquered the kingdom of Magadha ( modern Bihar province ) in the lower Ganges Valley. The conqueror's famous grandson, Asoka (reigned from 274-232 BC ), expanded his rule virtually throughout the subcontinent before converting to Buddhism and renouncing violence.

Prior to the Maurya the lower Indus Valley had experienced a significant although brief intrusion by the Hellenistic armies of Alexander the Great in 326-325 BC. Beginning in the Second century, the Bactrian Greeks, Scythians (called Sakas), Parthians, and Yueh-chi ( called Kushans ) overran northern India in succession. About AD 320 another Indian conqueror called Chandragupta restored imperial dominion over the entire subcontinent under the name of the Gupta dynasty.

The Guptas continued their control for more than two centuries before succumbing to a new wave of incursions from the north by a Turko-Mongol group called the White Huns, or Hephthalites.
