| | | Knife Glaive Polearm | The Glaive: A term
first recorded in the
13th century, used at
that time as an
alternative to the
lance, but from the
15th century onwards
it is used as a
synonym for sword and
dagger - at this time
it may have also been
applied to a large,
sharply pointed, back-
edged blade shaped
like a modern kitchen
knife, sometimes with
a short false edge
near the point. The
glaive or similarly
designed weapons are
very occasionally
shown in 13th to 14th
century manuscript
pictures wielded two-
handed by horsemen.
