Swiss, Zurich - Broad Halberd

The development of the Halberd: The term 'halberd', like the weapon, is Swiss in origin; it is first found as 'hellembart' in a poem by Konrad von Wurzburg, who died in 1287. The hallberd, seemingly a cross between a spear and a billhook, is more likely the development of the long-handled 'Danish' Axe shown in the Bayeux Tapestry. In some later forms, this big-headed, five- foot-hafted axe (called in England a Sparth) had the lower extremity of its edge prolonged and curled around the haft to produce what was in effect a secondary, reinforced socket.
