Palenque Sarcophagus Lid Replica
Replica of Mayan original that resides beneath the Temple of Inscriptions in the city of Palenque. In 1949 Alberto Ruz Lhuillier, the director of the Mexican National Institute of Anthropology, was in the process of excavating the city of Palenque. While studying an architectural oddity in the floor of the Temple of Inscriptions, Lhuillier realized that the stone floor was false. Upon removing the limestone slabs he discovered a rubble filled staircase leading beneath the temple and into the heart of the pyramid. Three years of backbreaking excavation revealed a massive stone sarcophagus. Sealing the sarcophagus was a twelve by seven foot limestone slab bearing an elaborate carving. Lhuillier and his men raised the five ton lid to reveal the body and funeral items of Lord Pacal, who ruled Palenque from 615 to 683 A.D.

Lord Pacal is the central figure of the carving. He lies in an offering bowl, about to descend into the jaws of the Earth Monster, here depicted as a sacred skeletal snake. The jaws are the portal to the underworld, through which Pacal must pass before rising back up to the heavens on the world tree, or Axis Mundi, which rises behind him. The top and bottom of the carving contain the portraits and names of Pacal's leading nobles during his reign. The left and right side of the carving bear sky bands, special glyphs that represent the stars and planets. The arrangement and positioning of the glyphs within the sky band mark the positions of the stars in the sky and are used much like a calendar to record the date of a certain event.

Hand colored cast stone wall sculpture 20" x 12" 13 lbs. Ready to hang.
