| | | Ancient Rome - 2nd Century Silver Emperor Caracalla Coins | Caracalla ( a nickname* derived from an invented cloak that he modeled ) was born on April 4th of the year 188, in what is today Lyon, France.
He ruled jointly with his father, Septimius Severus, from 198 to 211 and then alone from 211 until his assassination in 217. At the age of 14 he was married to Fulvia Plautilla, the daughter of the commander of the imperial guard, Fulvius Plautianus. Apparently Caracalla hated both his wife and father in law and it was by his hand that they both met their ends. There was a major rivalry between Caracalla and his younger brother Geta. All attempts by their mother, Julia Domna, at reconciliation were for naught and Caracalla stabbed Geta to death in the arms of their mother ( at a peace conference, no less ).
He next went about murdering all of his dead brother's supporters and friends.
In 212 he senselessly massacred a group of his allies in a war against the Alemanni and shortly before his war with the Parthians in 216 he annihilated the city of Alexandria slaughtering some 20,000 residents.
As is demonstrated on these coins of Caracalla his expression of cruelty is obvious, a trait that he liked to show to all, as it reinforced his power via fear & terror. He was finally murdered in 217 by the captain of his imperial guard, Marcinus ( his successor on the throne ).
*Another of his nicknames, Tarautas, was that of a horrible and blood-thirsty gladiator.
