| | | The Mayflower Model Ship - 1620 (Museum Quality) | On August 15, 1620, The Mayflower, a British cargo ship Captained by Christopher Jones, set sail from Plymouth, England with a Pilgrim colony of 102 people aboard. The Mayflower was 95 feet in length and displaced 180 tons. Her voyage across the Atlantic took 67 days to cross 3000 miles of stormy ocean at an average speed of two knots.
Due to primitive navigation techniques the Mayflower landed in Cape Cod, missing her intended destination. After exploring the coast of New England, the Pilgrims settled in what is now Plymouth. That winter the Pilgrims lived aboard the Mayflower while building their colony. On April 5, 1621, the Mayflower sailed back to England, but not a single member of the new colony went with her.
