| | | 1492 - Santa Maria Replica | In 1492, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain commissioned Christopher Columbus to find a direct route from Europe to the Indies. Columbus embarked on this voyage aboard the now famous Santa Maria, his flagship and lifeline to the Old World. Accompanying the Santa Maria were the Niņa and the Pinta.
This beautiful museum quality reproduction evokes the hardship and wonder that Columbus must have experienced aboard his sailing vessel. The original Santa Maria was only 98 feet long, yet still managed to traverse the dangerous weather along its route to the Americas.
Made by hand using plank-on-bulkhead construction and a variety of high quality woods. This method of construction involves individual planks being fitted to the hull of the model, one at a time. Then they are finished and detailed to the exacting standards you see here.
This process replicates the actual manner of how ships were built at the time, resulting in a realistic and faithful replica of the original ship.
