World History > Homo erectus

Homo erectus

Homo erectus, Latin for "upright man" is believed to be an ancestor of the homo sapien species of which modern humans belong. Anthropologists believe Homo erectus is a descendent of the more primitive ape-humans of the genus australopithecines (see Australopithecus afarensis), the earliest known link between modern homo sapiens and primitive apes. Archeological evidence suggests homo erectus migrated from Africa north to South East Asian subcontinent, beginning approximately 2.0 million years ago. The most recent settlements in South Eastern Asia discovered by archeologists date back to approximately 500,000 and 300,000 years ago in South Eastern Asia. Perhaps one of the more significant discoveries that have come to light with the study of Homo erectus is his use of more sophisticated stone tools including primitive edged hunting tools which ultimately permitted Homo erectus to establish the first hunter gatherer based society.

Homo erectus cranium

Homo erectus had a cranial capacity equal to about 75% of modern humans and exhibited a less sloping forehead characteristic of his more primitive ancestor Homo habilis. With an average height of approximately 5'10", and their overall body characteristics closely resembled modern humans. With the innovation of stone tools and stone weapons, Homo erectus became less vulnerable to attack from larger animals and instead began to prey on them. Some archeologists also believe that Homo erectus was the first human ancestor to successfully control fire.
