Throughout the 16th and into the 17th centuries, helmets evolved into three major types (all open- faced): the comb morion, the cabasset (also known as the Spanish morion) and; the morion cabasset. The morion's brim formed high peaks front and back with a raised comb atop the helmet. A later version of the morion used by English pikemen was called a "pot." The cabasset had a flat narrow brim and was tall with a "pear stalk" at the top. The morion cabasset combined the high peak brim with a "pear stalk" top.

Though popularized in American history books by the Spanish conquistadors, the morion helmet was actually in use by all countries in continental Europe throughout the mid 1500's to the late 1600's. This particular style with the crested ridge was first worn by infantry troops and pikemen in the late 1500's, and was common for musketeers and pikemen on both sides of the Thirty Year's War (1618- 1648), and the English Civil War (1642-1649). Contemporary illustrations show the morion being worn with either the crest to the fore or the crest to the rear. A morion helmet was often used to help remove eyesight problems of a close- face helmet in the heat of battle.
