1836 Paterson Revolving Black Powder Pistol
The Paterson revolving pistol was manufactured from 1836 to 1842 by the Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company in Paterson, New Jersey. This historical five- shooter revolver represents the first revolving pistol marketed and produced by Samuel Colt. It had a major effect on the expansion of the western frontier. It came into the limelight in 1844, when 80 Comanche warriors circled 16 Texas Rangers in West Texas. Accustomed to the traditional single-shot muzzle loading weapons of that era, they expected hand-to-hand combat at close quarter after the first volley had been fired. The gun's ability to fire five shots without reloading came as a complete surprise to the Indians and created a one-sided victory for the outnumbered Texans. The gun then became a popular sidearm on the Texas frontier, but Samuel Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company was ahead of its time and eventually went bust.

The black powder revolver presented here was introduced to the Old West prior to the Civil War (1861 - 1865), but also saw extensive use during during that war.

This trend-setting, historical black powder revolver features a folding trigger, a five-shot cylinder, and a 7 1/2" barrel in .36 caliber.
