The American colonies sought independence from the British due to the increasing enroaching authority of the British government in the areas of taxation and colonial governance. |

Though the British were able to exert military superiority with their navy upon the coastal colonial cities and towns, their relatively small ground force proved ineffective in out flanking the American continental army. With the assistance of France and other European countries, the American colonists finally defeated the British and formed the United States of America. |
