After inventing a
small portable
typewriter, George C.
Blickensderfer
established The
Blickensderfer
Manufacturing Company
in Stamford,
Connecticut in 1889.
The Blickensderfer
typewriter was the
first truly
lightweight practical
typewriter to be
produced in
quantity. At first,
the Blickensderfer
used the "Ideal"
keyboard but later
models changed to
the "Universal"
keyboard to meet
popular demand.
The "Blick" as the
Blickensderfer was
affectionately named,
printed from an ink
roll, had a double
shift and a keyboard
with 28 keys capable
of writing 84
characters. The
Blickensderfer
achieved world wide
popularity, due in
part to the over 100
different type-wheels
and keyboards
available with the
machine.
In 1897,
Blickensderfer
produced an improved
model, with its
Blickensderfer No. 7
typewriter. Further
improvements were
made in 1907 when the
company manufactured
the Blickensderfer
No. 8 typewriter.
The Blickensderfer
typewriter was the
first machine to be
produced with its own
portable wooden
traveling case.
