On February 28, 1827, the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad became the very first U.S. railway chartered for transportation of freight and passengers on a commercial basis. The initial investors wanted a Baltimore ( at that time, America's 2nd largest city after New York )railroad to compete with the Erie Canal.
This 1899 Preferred Trust Stock certificate of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad represents the number of shares of preferred stock in the company to be held in trust until March, 1904, shown in the upper right corner ( handwritten in ) and perforated into the certificate in the upper left by the vignette of the train. At a book value of $100 a share, this certificate represents a sizeable investment for the turn of the century. Each with a truly classic vignette of a steam locomotive.
